Communicate, Explore, and Connect Across Cultures
Level 1A & Level 1B / Novice Low — Novice High
Overview
EntreCulturas is a four-level, standards-based, thematically organized program. Each level consists of six units that provide learners with opportunities to interact and engage with authentic materials and adolescent speakers of the language. By learning in an intercultural context, students acquire communication skills and content knowledge while exploring the products, practices, and perspectives of Spanish-speaking cultures.
EntreCulturas 1A & 1B
Wayside Publishing is proud to present the EntreCulturas Second Edition, our proficiency-based Spanish language series with an emphasis on literacy and interculturality.
Key Features
-
The series integrates Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) themes and subthemes from the outset. This alignment ensures that learners engage with content relevant to these curricula, supporting a comprehensive educational experience.
-
EntreCulturas incorporates a wide array of authentic and semi-authentic materials across various media types (print, audio, video, images). These resources, sourced from native speakers, immerse learners in genuine cultural contexts, enhancing their understanding of cultural products, practices, and perspectives.
-
The series follows a backward design methodology, beginning with defining essential questions and learning objectives aligned with target proficiency levels and AP® themes. This approach ensures that activities and assessments are strategically designed to support learners' progression from formative to summative assessments.
-
Can-Do statements enable learners to self-assess their abilities and track progress throughout their language learning journey. These statements are incorporated into activities to support communicative and intercultural competencies.
-
Assignable Can-Do statements in each unit of EntreCulturas show learners a direct connection between tasks and what they are aiming to be able to do in Spanish. Learners can upload completed Can-Do assignments to their student portfolios to show growth, and when it is time to evaluate their learning, students can complete performance-based formative and summative assessments.
-
The series includes formative assessments (e.g., En camino) that prepare students for summative Integrated Performance Assessments (IPAs). These assessments are differentiated to cater to diverse learner needs, supporting their readiness for higher-level evaluations.
-
EntreCulturas emphasizes the development of intercultural understanding alongside language skills. Each unit includes reflection prompts and activities that encourage learners to explore and appreciate cultural diversity within Spanish-speaking communities.
-
The digital Learning Site offers a cohesive platform where learners can access all resources in one place. It supports varied learning styles with interactive and immersive content, enhancing the overall learning experience.
-
The series provides a library of over 70 Spanish CI/ADI readers, correlated with EntreCulturas, to accommodate different proficiency levels and learner interests.
-
Nualang, an interactive platform, is seamlessly integrated throughout the series to help students practice listening, speaking, and pronunciation skills. Instant feedback from "Nualas" further supports effective language learning.
-
An IPA, or Integrated Performance Assessment, is a final project that evaluates students' language proficiency. Each unit ends with "Vive entre culturas," which is a summative IPA designed to assess students' skills within a personalized cultural context.
-
The comprehensive Teacher’s Edition includes instructional notes, answer keys, cultural engagement guidance, scaffolding tips, and support for heritage learners, ensuring educators have the tools needed to effectively teach with the series.
-
Updated videoblogger videos enhance learning by providing authentic insights into language and culture, reinforcing themes and topics covered in each unit.
-
The series aligns fully with ACTFL World-Readiness Standards, incorporating Can-Do Statements and proficiency guidelines, thereby preparing learners for real-world language use and assessment.
