Attending the FFLA Conference? Ride the Tide of Advocacy at Our Pre-Conference Workshop

šŸ“… October 22 Ā
šŸ“ Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront ResortĀ

Wayside is hosting a free, full-day preconference workshop on October 22, the day before FFLA officially begins in Daytona Beach. Every world language program has a story worth telling, and this workshop is built to help you find the words and the plan to confidently tell it. Come curious, leave equipped, and walk into the main conference already ahead of the tide. Register for the preconference and use coupon code WAYSIDE to attend at no cost.Ā

Your Program Has a Story. Let's Tell It. Ā

Across two half-day sessions, you'll rediscover the evidence already living in your practice, build the advocacy skills to share it with the people who need to hear it, and leave with tools to make advocacy feel doable. Come curious, leave equipped, and somewhere in between, discover that you've been the best argument for your program all along.

Attend one session or both. Each stands on its own and builds on the other.Ā

Pre Conference Workshops

  • Morning Session: Your Proof Is in the Practice

What a high-quality world language classroom looks like — and how to show it

    October 3, 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do for your program is slow down and look at what you're already doing and find the words to describe it. This session invites you to take a fresh look at what's happening in your classroom and recognize it for what it is: evidence. You'll explore what proficiency-driven instruction looks like today and connect your daily teaching practices to a story that resonates beyond the classroom. You'll walk away with a simple framework for describing your program to anyone who asks, from a curious parent to a skeptical school board member.

Your classroom is your best advocacy tool. Let's give it the spotlight it deserves.Ā

  • Afternoon Session: Be Seen and Heard

Practical ways to raise your program's profile without adding to your plate

    October 3, 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

You've done the work in your classroom and now it's time to make sure people know it. This session explores how visibility works for educators — from the way you introduce yourself to the social post that reminds your community why language learning matters. We'll take an honest look at the channels worth your time, including hallways, newsletters, open house nights, LinkedIn, and Instagram, and help you build a realistic plan for showing up where it counts. Advocacy doesn't require a ring light or daily posting schedule — you just need to find your voice and the platform to tell your advocacy story.Ā

Conference Sessions

  • Session 1 | Unplug to Connect: Move, Talk, Create — No Screens Needed

    Michelle Olah and Dagoberto Polanco

Nine strategies. Three modes. Zero screens. This hands-on session gives world language educators nine high-impact, no-tech routines — three for interpretive, three for interpersonal, and three for presentational communication. You won't just learn about them; you'll do them. Move, talk, and create your way through activities so engaging you'll wonder why you ever needed a computer in the first place.

  • Session 2 | Riding the Wave: What APĀ® World Language Teachers Need to Know About the 2026–27 Course Revisions

    Michelle Olah and Dagoberto Polanco

The APĀ® World Language & Culture courses are changing — all six of them, all at once, effective school year 2026–27. Language leaders who understand this shift early will be the ones helping their departments navigate the current, not get pulled under by it. In this session, you'll dive into all four phases of the new course project structure the way your students will on exam day, surface with a clear picture of what changes (and what stays the same), and chart a practical Keep/Adapt/Add course for your own curriculum. The tide is already moving — come ready to ride it. No prior knowledge of the revisions required.Ā

APunta al futuro

Built in alignment with the updated APĀ® course framework, Apunta al futuro integrates current themes, learning objectives, and performance expectations so teachers can focus on meaningful instruction, not retrofitting materials.Ā
