Overview

Azulejo’s standards-based curriculum, simultaneously emphasizing context and themes, introduces students to high-level critical thinking as it prepares them for success in the AP® Spanish Literature and Culture Course.

Multifaceted prep for the Spanish AP® Literature and Culture Course

Azulejo is divided into units that progress chronologically but are organized along a common thread. The chronological approach allows students to study the historical context in which the work was written and to appreciate how authors see, engage, and influence their world. Essential questions are reprinted at the end of each unit to facilitate class preparation.

Teacher Edition

The Azulejo Teacher Edition provides Notas para el profesor to accompany every text, describing the theme, structure, historical context, voice, point of view, and more. Sample answers to the discussion questions and essays are also included.

Practice Tasks

Azulejo offers AP® practice tasks for every author on the exam. The Analytical Essay Guide details the three key parts of an analytical essay. Based on both teaching experience and the College Board's guidelines, a Writing and Correcting Guide for Poetic and Analytic Essays delineates what is expected of an outstanding critical essay and establishes a template for grading.

Take a quick look at Azulejo

"With such a range of reading to finish ahead of test-time, wouldn’t it be great if the works were compiled into one anthology? Well, guess what? “Azulejo” (the name means “tile,” like those used in a mosaic) includes all the works from the reading list with the added bonus of exercises and supplementary information to help you learn and think critically about what you’re reading."

"I love this book! The readings are well-chosen for historical and literary relevance, and are manageable in length. Appendices for student reference are excellent. A chart in the back of the book shows how each reading correlates to themes and contexts of AP Spanish Lit Exam."

Diana Galyen

"My students take the books home to complete readings independently and to write their dialectical journal entries, and bring them to class each day so that we can discuss and analyze the readings as a group. During a recent unit on poetry of the Spanish Gilded Age, we recited all poems aloud in class, and students were particularly impressed by Sor Juana's wordplay. To date, my students say that the poetry unit and the study of Don Quixote have been their favorite. We are currently reading El burlador de Sevilla by Tirso de Molina, a work of drama from the same time period, and students have selected roles to read and perform. Our in-class readings of this work have been extremely enjoyable, as students have had a lot of fun performing the roles of their selected characters. Having access to these textbooks has tremendously aided my students' learning. All of the works on the AP Spanish Literature and Culture reading list are included in Azulejo, and the book's rigorous discussion and analysis questions push my students to think critically. The historical and socio-cultural information contained in the book has allowed students to make connections between different literary periods and to understand each work as a product of its particular context. I have been pleased to witness tremendous improvement even just over the past three months in my students' knowledge of literary terms and themes, and in their ability to summarize, synthesize and analyze these very challenging works of literature in the Spanish language."
