Julie Pacheco-Toye

About

Julie Pacheco-Toye has dedicated her career to promoting global citizenship and intercultural understanding through World Language education. Toward this end, Julie taught secondary Spanish for 25 years in Oregon. Before joining Wayside Publishing as an Instructional Strategist, she served as an Instructional Coach and New Teacher Mentor for four years, training and supporting K-12 teachers in all subject areas, but she never lost her passion for World Language education. Her areas of focus and expertise include building community in the World Language Classroom, Universal Design for Learning, communicative and proficiency-based practices, and Cultural and Linguistic Responsiveness.

Julie holds a master's degree from Universidad de Granada (in Spain): Máster para la Enseñanza y Aprendizaje del Idioma Español y su Cultura, and a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Portland State University. She has been a PSU Challenge Instructor and Faculty Partner.

Julie has served on several committees of the Oregon Department of Education and is a past Oregon State Director of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica. She has presented at district professional development conferences and at state-level conferences for language educators.

Having spent extensive time in Spain and Costa Rica, Julie lived in Ecuador for a semester in college, and has also traveled in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Peru, and several other countries. In her free time, she enjoys travel above all—but also photography, flamenco dance, travel writing, and cultural exchange.

Julie believes that interculturality and global education are key to building a more peaceful and joyful world through communication and understanding—and that youth will lead the way when given the tools, skills, and opportunities to do so.
