Providing Comprehensible Input to Get the Output

Comprehensible input helps students acquire language naturally and fosters learning environments where students can engage with language in meaningful, context-rich ways. Learners need to experience comprehensible language repeatedly before they can build on it and produce output. This session will look at why providing comprehensible input for our students is so important. We will share some strategies and lesson ideas for you to build your students’ proficiency.

Strategies to Increase Target Language Use

Maintaining target language in the classroom can be a challenge but there are strategies to make it easier for both teachers and students. In this session, you will gain practical, ready-to-use tips and tricks to strive for that 90%+.

Talking with Students and Stakeholders About Proficiency

In this session, we discuss ways to support student-centered conversations about ACTFL’s proficiency levels and share ready-to-use strategies for presenting level-appropriate language, especially for novice and intermediate learners. You’ll gain practical ideas to help students, parents, and school leaders better understand what terms like "novice," "intermediate," and "advanced" mean in a proficiency-based classroom.

Providing Level-Appropriate Language

Presenting and practicing language in context is at the heart of a proficiency-driven instruction, but what does language in context look like in a novice classroom? How is it different for intermediate learners? In this session, we will explore what level-appropriate language means for novice and intermediate language learners and offer strategies on how to provide level-appropriate language to your students.
