Overview

Growing up in a Republican family during Franco’s fascist rule of Spain, Emilia Matamoros discovers just how important keeping a secret can be. After her father, a former captain in the Republican army, goes into hiding, Emilia not only must work as a seamstress to support her family, but she must also guard a secret that will protect her father and save her family from certain death. Will her innocence be lost and will she succumb to the deceptive and violent tactics of Franco’s fascist regime?

This Comprehension-based™ reader, ‘La hija del Sastre’, strategically weaves high-level language structures into a compelling story, based on high-frequency vocabulary. Even upper-level language students need repeated exposure to language structures in order to acquire them, and Wayside's intermediate readers maintain a high-frequency factor of high-level language structures, thus helping learners progress beyond typical proficiency levels.

La hija del sastre Teacher's Guide

Our Teacher's Guides are loaded with resources to enrich the teaching and learning experience.

I am currently using La Hija del sastre by Carrie Toth in my level 4 class, and the amount of communication that can come from the topics and vocabulary presented in the novel is simply amazing. Students are getting a lot of exposure to "complex" grammar structures, and are using them to discuss the novel, and to discuss their own lives.

How do you all use graded readers to promote communication in your class?
