Overview

Level 2 recycles grammar, vocabulary, and culture with the content introduced and practiced in Level 1, and leverages communicative practice and comprehensible input strategies so that learners can acquire new vocabulary and grammar in context.

The proficiency-driven EntreCulturas program is all about teaching novice to intermediate students the Spanish language through the lens of interculturality, so they can discover appropriate ways to interact with others whose perspectives may be different from their own.

Each unit opens with essential questions, objectives expressed communicatively, and a short review section that explicitly shows students what they are expected to know in terms of vocabulary and grammar. Learners and educators are provided with numerous supports that make communicative tasks around authentic resources, formative checks, and summative IPAs feel natural and individualized. The online Explorer® provides all audio-visual resources, scaffolding, vocabulary, and grammar reinforcement, including flipped classroom videos, with all activities tied to an online portfolio to upload performance evidence.

The educator-author team considered a variety of learner and educator styles in the backward design of the series. The program integrates all of the 2017 ACTFL World-Readiness Standards, and aligns with or exceeds every state's language standards. Content includes IB® and AP® task types and themes without compromising on our commitment to empower each learner to communicate in the real world. Units are clearly organized with ample strategies and support offered in the textbook, on the Learning Site, and in a constantly growing community of proficiency practitioners.

"I teach Spanish 1 and 2 using EntreCulturas and this is my third year using the program. All of the resources are very intuitive. It's easy for me to navigate the Learning Site and find resources that learners need for each lesson. It's easy for me to find the formative assessments, to assign them, and to adjust the attempts they get to receive a passing grade.

The learners like it a lot because it's very fresh. For example in the food unit, there is discussion around food trucks and the kids love it and it's easy for them to relate. Something that hit me and that I love about the family unit is how there are nontraditional families represented. It's easy for my kids to look at the images and see people who look like them. "

This is the only textbook series that incorporates comprehensible input strategies and has supports from Level 1 to prepare students for the AP® exam.

I've been using levels one and two with my first and second-year learners. I like it because it is clear and effective as an entry-level proficiency tool. The learners like it because they aren't as scared as they are of other textbooks. The material is made to be accessible to THEM. The layout is easy to follow, and even the font is approachable, which for entry-level learning is very helpful. I appreciate that the content and resources show younger students "a true and honest source" they can connect to because it looks like something they might see in a store, on TV, or on the internet. When there is integrity to learning through authenticity, it motivates the kids to stay in the target language.

Other texts claim to use culture as a vehicle for learning the target language. So, the primary question is: Does EntreCulturas succeed in presenting L2 language learning through an authentic lens of the cultures of Spanish speaking people from countries that offer an incredible amount of diversity in language, food, history, folklore and race?

The answer is yes! EntreCulturas 1 has succeeded with the integration of a culture-based presentation with Spanish language acquisition. Students learn by immersion into a cultural experience of Spanish-speaking natives and are then able to discuss their findings in class through authentic dialog.

Another question arises: Will this be another text with chapters that attempt to cover so much vocabulary, grammar, culture, and text-generated conversation that the instructor has to choose how much to leave out?

No! The presentation is not so ambitious that it presents time limitations. The model and “real” classroom presentation are a perfect fit.

The Interactive Digital Textbook

Your FlexText® is the page-by-page digital version of the textbook and is available through your Explorer® class or the FlexText® Library link on your Dashboard. Don't want to bring home your textbook? No problem! FlexText® is available wherever there is internet access.

A Community Bulletin Board

Learners and teachers alike use the Classroom Forum anytime as their online community bulletin board. Teachers love posting lesson openers, polls, links to external resources, and more. And students can comment, exchange GIFS, and upload audio, videos, and photos.

Learning to hold a conversation

Mock conversations with pre-recorded conversation prompts challenge your learners to hone their conversational skills. Learners record themselves replying to comments and questions, and the recorded conversations can be added to their portfolio as an artifact.

Tracking Their Own Progress

Online student portfolios follow learners from unit to unit, level to level. Students can upload evidence of what they can do in the language - assigned Can-Do statements, activities, quizzes, audio files, PowerPoint and Word files, and more. This allows them to set goals and reflect on their progress related to Can-Do Statements.

Efficient, Integrated Grading

Use the online calendar to remind students of upcoming assignments and deadlines, assign tasks to specific learners or an entire class, and more. Explorer® lets you know when your students complete their work and alerts students as soon as you’ve graded. Grade each quiz question response without opening each question in Explorer®. Automatic grading is available where appropriate.
